Students serve as Gamecock guides through social media content creation – UofSC News & Events

Gamecock Guides are newly hired students who will soon become familiar faces on UofSC social media channels. Guides strive to create content that will amplify the university’s messages, build virtual relationships that engage other students, and serve as UofSC representatives.

Gamecock Guides will also be responsible for checking in with students in quarantine and isolation, with a particular focus on mental health, academic success, and virtual engagement.

Below is a Q&A session to help you get to know some of the Gamecock guides. Be sure to follow @UofSC on social media to learn more about the guides and virtually meet others throughout the year.

What is your favorite type of content creation?

My favorite type of content creation is video.

What topics are you most looking forward to covering?

I’m especially intrigued by UofSC football, as well as reaching out to other veteran students who may have a hard time adjusting to college life after being in the military, or those who still serve or serve as members of the guard like me.

What are you most looking forward to as a Gamecock guide?

I especially look forward to the opportunity to make an impact on my fellow students and to be able to help provide insight into things I wish I had known when I moved here. I hope I can do my best to really guide the students to the best possible experience. There are so many opportunities and adventures here that so few people know about.

What is your favorite type of content creation?

I especially love photography and video, even the occasional memes or two.

What topics are you most looking forward to covering?

Soccer games, places to eat / grocery store, student organizations, things to do in Colombia and what a student’s life really looks like. These are all my favorite things and things I wish I had known before coming to UofSC.

What are you most looking forward to as a Gamecock guide?

Having the chance to publicly share why I love UofSC so much and being able to capture memories and keep them forever.

What is your favorite type of content creation?

Video! It allows students and others to share a part of their life. We can show our personality, verbally express the things we are passionate about, and tell stories that come to life on camera. I participated in a video fundraiser and am also preparing to participate in an autobiographical blog. I love that Gamecock Guides are encouraged to record parts of their lives. This allows us to facilitate the sharing of the UofSC experience to a wide audience.

What topics are you most looking forward to covering?

This year is an election year and I am a member of CLEAT, the Civic Leadership Education and Action team, under the auspices of the Center for Leadership and Service. I am very passionate about encouraging civil rights advocacy, and I believe this is a vital time for students to get involved. We are watching social justice happen across the country. Protests and riots have broken out in many pockets, a global pandemic is occurring and people are frustrated and disillusioned. Now is not the time to be passive, but to engage, to speak, to vote and to act. I have covered National Voter Registration Day before and look forward to encouraging students to make their voices heard on campus.

What are you most looking forward to as a Gamecock guide?

As a Gamecock guide, I am very excited to give people a glimpse into my student life. Research has shown that prospective students trust the experience of other students. Therefore, it is vitally important that high school, non-traditional and transfer students get a glimpse of authentic life at UofSC before settling on this beautiful campus. I think this is a brilliant initiative that will yield high results on and off campus.

My favorite type of content creation is making videos for students to watch, whether that’s academic videos or just regular videos of random stuff on campus.

What topics are you most looking forward to covering?

I am very happy to cover videos of sporting events inside Williams-Brice Stadium, Founders’ Park and more.

What are you most looking forward to as a Gamecock guide?

This semester, I look forward to being able to help students in any way I can, current or future, to get excited about the University of South Carolina.
